McMASTER DEFEATS WINDSOR 40-11 TO CELEBRATE 71ST ANNUAL HOMECOMING

October 18, 2008 Hamilton, ON - On a beautiful sunny afternoon, in front of 4,711 fans, the McMaster Marauders (4-4) defeated the Windsor Lancers (3-5) on Homecoming weekend, 40-11, to advance to the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) Quarter-Finals.

McMaster took a 19-11 lead into the half, and scored 21 unanswered points in the second half to secure the sixth and final playoff spot.

The Marauder defense allowed only 264 yards, and limited the Windsor Lancers to only 52 yards rushing on 24 carries.

Windsor fifth year running back Darryl Stephenson (London, ON) was held to 23 yards on 12 carries. Stephenson finished his OUA career with 5,163 rushing yards giving him the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) career rushing record.

McMaster fifth year, linebacker, Simon Binder (Almonte, ON) was presented with the Mark Timpany Trophy as the Most Valuable player of the McMaster Homecoming game for leading the Marauders defense.

Fellow McMaster linebacker, Denver Brown (Bowmanville, ON), filling in for the injured OUA Rookie of the year, Ryan Chmielewski(St. Catharines, ON) had 7 tackles and and 2 forced fumbles. Kurt Morrison (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) had 6 tackles and an interception.

McMaster sophmore running back, Joey Nemet (Burlington, ON) galloped for a career high 172 yards on 20 carries. He was named the the Score University Rush Player of the Game for his efforts.

McMaster quarterback, Ryan Fantham (London, ON) threw for 235 yards and three touchdowns, and scored a fourth major on a 2 yard run in the fourth quarter.

McMaster receiver, Kevin D’Hollander (London, ON) continued his strong play, hauling in 5 passes for 102 yards and a touchdown. Mike Bradwell (Toronto, ON) added 4 receptions for 67 yards and a touchdown. Windsor rookie quarterback, Sam Malian (Lasalle, ON) completed 18 of 34 passes for 205 yards and 2 interceptions. His primary target was Mike Harrington (Windsor, ON) with 11 receptions for 7 yards.

The Windsor defense was led by John Celestino (Windsor, ON with 8 tackles. Justin Clarke (Burlington, ON) and Bryan Quayson (Mississauga, ON) had 5 tackles each for the Lancers.

McMaster will travel to Waterloo next Saturday, October 5, 2008 at 1:00 P.M. to face the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks (5-3)in a OUA Quarter-Final match up.

The Golden Hawks have defeated McMaster seven-straight contests. They defeated McMaster 50-31 on October 11, 2008.
